Entergy New Orleans is taking proactive measures to bolster the city's power grid, addressing concerns raised by residents following a significant May outage. The utility company is replacing aging wooden utility poles with stronger steel poles designed to withstand strong winds, a crucial step in preparing for the upcoming hurricane season.
The $100 million grid-hardening plan encompasses 63 projects and over 3,100 structures across the city. So far, Entergy has installed 315 steel poles in District D, represented by Councilman Eugene Green, which includes Gentilly, parts of Lakeview, St. Roch, and St. Claude. Despite this progress, Green acknowledges that infrastructure upgrades are an ongoing necessity in New Orleans.
Deanna Rodriguez, President and CEO of Entergy New Orleans, emphasizes the importance of preparedness, stating, 'Even if a storm doesn't come, we want to be ready.' The current phase of grid improvements is set to be completed by the end of the year, after which Entergy will seek additional funding approval from the New Orleans City Council for future investments.
However, some residents remain concerned about power reliability during hurricane season. Michael Palendrano, a resident of St. Roch, has grown accustomed to preparing for outages. He expresses a valid worry about the potential loss of air conditioning during the summer heat, which could be a significant issue for both humans and pets. Despite these concerns, Entergy officials assure the public that the current investment did not result in customer bill increases, funded through government grants and lawsuit settlement money.
As Entergy continues its efforts to strengthen the power grid, residents are encouraged to report any damaged utility poles or power lines to the city.
